Showdown of the Cutting Artists


It was a competition, which demanded everything: On January 11, 2020, Hamburg’s BEEF! and B-EAT magazine was looking for the “Master of Cutting” in their show kitchen. The contestants were able to prove their knowledge in three disciplines: Cutting fast, cutting precise and creative cutting. Their tools: The Crafter and the Epicure series from WÜSTHOF.

An expert jury examined the concise cutting: BEEF! And B-EAT Editor in Chief Jan Spielhagen, star cook Renato Manzi, as well as our CEO Viola WÜSTHOF. Once the challenge ended, the jury glanced into happy and surprised faces. Thanks to outstanding performances, a total of three winners were picked!

The Master of Cutting 2020

For more than a month, the BEEF! and B-EAT magazine was accepting online submissions from food fans and professional chefs for the Master of Cutting event in Hamburg. Out of hundreds of applicants, the jury picked ten promising cutting talents.

Two categories differentiated the contestants: ambitious hobby chefs competed for the “Master of Cutting” and pro chefs from all over Germany for the “Master of Cutting Pro.”


Highly motivated contestants

„Never have I experienced such a calm kitchen – everyone was so focused on their work,” Viola WÜSTHOF realized just a few minutes after the start of the Master of Cutting event. Finely chopped parsley, tartar made from salmon or perfectly cubed celery – concentrated and with passion for the #CuttingMoment, the contestants prepared culinary highlights such as a Hawaiian poké bowl.

As they were preparing, the contestants must have been thinking about the main prize of the challenge: a trip to the Aldiana Club Costa del Sol at the sun-kissed Andalusian coast. Together with a guest of their choice, the winner would be invited to the renowned “Aldiana Gourmet Summit”, a high-class culinary event.

As the contestants gave everything to bring home the title “Master of Cutting 2020,” the jury took to the BEEF! and B-EAT magazine show kitchen with their evaluation sheets and inspected cutting techniques, speed, and precision, as well as aesthetics of the prepared food.

The three jurors were able to rely on their own long standing experience: as the Editor in Chief of BEEF! and B-EAT, Jan Spielhagen has seen plenty of creatively prepared meals and thus is able to judge how food should be presented. Star chef Renato Renzi manages the “Genussmanufaktur Tenne” at the Mawell Resort in Hohenlohe, a temple of indulgence, and knows how much a meal’s taste depends on proper preparation techniques. And Viola WÜSTHOF can assess the skillful handling of the knives of the Crafter and Epicure series like no other.

The Winners

Excitedly, ten food fans and pro chefs glanced over the free-standing kitchen counter of the host’s premises, the BEEF! and B-EAT magazine, as the jury announced the winners. Tension quickly turned into surprise because instead of only two names, three are being called!

In the food fan challenge “Master of Cutting 2020,” Anna Schmidt from Daisendorf in Southern Germany as well as Thomas Kuhnt from Sonthofen went head to head and both were crowned with the title. The pro chef Josef Nentwig received the title of “Master of Cutting Pro 2020.” All three winners will travel to the gourmet summit at Aldiana Club Costa Del Sol. The whole WÜSTHOF team warmly congratulates and wishes all contestants many more exceptional #CuttingMoments.
