Creating and planting

The raised bed is perfect for urban farming, it doesn't take up much space and feels perfectly comfortable on balconies, terraces or in our courtyard. With the raised bed there is no gardening in a stooped position and on your knees. It really has many advantages.

The term raised-bed balcony means a high planter box for the balcony. You can either design a planter box yourself or simply buy it as a kit in a hardware store. Depending on what you want to plant, the composition of your bed will vary. Since we wanted to grow vegetables and herbs, we decided on a total of four layers.



You can't go wrong with radishes if you want to have quick success in urban farming. Because the small, red balls can be harvested after just over a month. Simply dig a 0.5 to 1 cm deep hole in a sunny or semi-shady spot, put seeds in at intervals of about five to seven centimetres and cover them only slightly with soil. To dig the planting holes, we used the machete from the Urban Farmer series, with which you can also easily harvest lettuce heads and large vegetables.

The nutty arugula is a plant that is satisfied with almost all conditions. It is perfect for urban farming beginners, as it is incredibly easy to care for. Arugula boosts the immune system with vitamin C, folic acid keeps the heart and brain fit and has an antibiotic effect. It is best to use rocket as young as possible when it still has small leaves and tender stems. If you don't cut the leaves too deep when you harvest, the rocket will sprout again and you can harvest again. The Urban Farmer Harvester Knife is particularly suitable for this purpose. With its distinctive curvature it is perfect for harvesting herbs and vegetables. So nothing stands in the way of spicing up salads, pizzas and pasta!

For the nasturtium we have a special place in our Urban Farming hearts.

Because not only its leaves, but also the beautiful orange flowers are edible and make every dish a real eye-catcher. It is also valued as a medicinal plant for its antibiotic effect. The nasturtium should be left in the sun or in partial shade. It is important to water the plant regularly, but not to fertilize it excessively. Because: the more nutrient-poor the soil, the more flowers the nasturtium sprouts. Depending on the planting time, you can harvest for the first time about four to six weeks after sowing. Do not cut the whole plant, but always cut off a few leaves with a sharp knife - this way you will always have fresh green until frost.
For harvesting nasturtium the Urban Farmer Harvesting Knife ** is ideal and for preparation you use the Urban Farmer Vegetable Knife **, with which you can peel and chop fruit and vegetables particularly well.

Chard is easy to plant and to care , contains many vitamins and minerals and is therefore healthy and delicious. The raised bed is ideal for chard, which it grows best in humus- and nutrient-rich soils. If you use chard seeds, you will have to wait about 6 to 8 weeks for the harvest, but it is worth the wait! To speed up the process, you can also use small chard plants from the hardware stores, plant centers or even from the weekly market. Plant the chard at a distance of 30 to 40 centimetres, as the leaves can become quite large. You should always keep the soil moist and protect the seeds from frost at the beginning. The great colours of the chard stems and leaves become more intense the lower the temperatures are. So chard will become more and more colourful if you keep it in the bed until November and it takes the first night frosts with it.

Fresh herbs from the garden are healthy, decorative and have an incomparable aroma.  Suitable for sunny locations are, for example, lavender, rosemary, thyme or marjoram, sage, oregano, savory, chamomile and lemon verbena. But you can also plant wild garlic, lemon balm, parsley, chives and many other herbs in your raised bed in partial shade.  

With the herbs we cheated a bit and planted small bushes instead of seeds. We have chosen herbs that are hardy and perennial (except basil): Lemon mint, Genovese basil, French rosemary, chives and Greek oregano. And lo and behold, the herbs seem to like it a lot better in our bed than in their cramped plant pots!
